The Sydney Harbour Bridge

Description

Hi all,

I was on a course in my home town of Sydney in the first week of December, and I decided to bring up my camera, tripod and lens to image the smiley face conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and the Moon.

I had wanted to get an artistic shot with the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the foreground with the trio in the background. Something which no-one else I knew was doing, or had done.

Well, that was an epic fail of enormous proportions. Thanks, cloud. Oh, well. Perhaps next time, whenever that is.

Anyway, instead, I have nabbed this.

This is a panoramic mosaic of 8 portrait orientation images; each of which was a 3-image blend. I worked on this one in Photoshop for quite some time to get it just how I wanted it. It may show up with a bit too much saturation, but, that's how I wanted it to be. Desaturating the image took away from the visual impact of the beautiful light blue behind the bridge.

There is a slight tilt on the horizon (about a degree's worth), but, that is intentional -- I thought that the vertical struts of the bridge deserved to be perfectly vertical.

You can also see that the work on the bridge (right in the middle of the bridge) for New Years Eve had already started.

Shot at 24mm at f/4 on the lovely 24-105 f/4L IS USM lens.

This was an enormous image, close to 8,000 pixels in width. In the original image, you can see the detail in the railings above the arch of the bridge. There appears to be some compression artifacts, and my deviantART address is unreadable in my signature, as I have reduced it to 1,280 pixels in width.

Comments and critique, as always, are welcome.

Regards,
H

What has really caught my eye is how calm the water is and the glow from the lights reflecting off it. Gives you a serene and enlightening feel to such a beautiful photo. :)
